Hawaii International Music Festival announces its seventh season from Jan. 3 to Jan. 10. Founded in 2016 by acclaimed artists violinist Eric Silberger, Metropolitan Opera soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra and pianist Carlin Ma, the festival will feature a concert in celebration of HIMF’s newly-donated Steinway D.
The workshop will host a free one-hour public lecture in Hilo at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Christ Lutheran Church-Hilo at 595 Kapiolani St. “The Rise and Fall of Bel Canto and the Future of Singing” will be given by Amy Shoremount-Obra, and will include an introduction to the old bel canto method of singing and group singing exercises. The lecture is open to the public and a free-will offering will be graciously accepted at the door.
At 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, HIMF will present “A Celebration of Music!” at Pahala Plantation House, 96-3209 Maile Street in Pahala. The concert will be a celebration of Hawaii International Music Festival’s over 100-year-old Steinway D. The concert features the music of Franck, Chaminade, Bachelet, R. Strauss and more performed by violinist Eric Silberger; Canadian pianist Oskar Yao; soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra; pianist and Kauai resident Monica Chung; pianist, music director, coach and Hawaii resident Maika‘i Nash; conductor and artistic director/principal conductor of TerpsiKord Carmine Aufiero and three young singers from The Garcìa School workshop: Chinese soprano Zoe Gao, San Francisco-based baritone Andrew Fellows and Mexican soprano Sandra Aldaz Meraz.
The workshop concludes with an additional concert featuring all singers of The Garcìa School Vocal Workshop at 7 p.m. on Tuesday Jan. 9 at Pahala Plantation House, 96-3209 Maile St. in Pahala. Conducted by Carmine Aufiero with Maika‘i Nash at the piano, the first half of the program will include ensembles from several of Mozart’s most beloved operas and the second half of the program will include art songs, arias and musical theater selections by various composers.
